About Us

The Particles Platform is an informal alliance of EU industry associations, across a broad range from chemicals to metals, dedicated to scientific understanding, exchange of information and exploring science-based practical solutions for regulatory and policy developments connected to materials in the form of particles.

To protect workers and consumers, manufacturers and leading scientists joined forces to understand the specificities of particles better and find a workable and more focused approach under the umbrella of “The Particles Platform”.

The Particles Platform discusses and shares scientific and regulatory developments at European and international level on the issues related to the inhalation of materials in the form of particles which exhibit no or very low inherent toxicity. Most concerns are related to workers potentially inhaling materials in the form of particles during the manufacturing and processing of solid materials.

The Particles Platform was established after a workshop with the European Commission and Member States on December 5, 2022, followed by a kick-off meeting in March 2023.

Scope

Most studies and regulatory actions to date have been conducted at a substance-specific level, even though many of the issues are not substance-specific but rather size-related. This has led to inconsistent or disproportionate regulations.

The Particles Platform aims to enhance understanding of the broader scientific context and propose regulatory solutions that more effectively address the specific concerns

The Platform does not have a separate legal entity and is not operating under the umbrella of a single legal entity but is supported by all its partners.
